Inlays & Onlays

Inlays and onlays are dental restorations that are used when your tooth requires more than a standard filling but not an entire crown. If you want a discreet restoration to repair minor to moderate damage to your tooth, Dr. Jon C. Bauman, our knowledgeable dentist, may recommend that dental inlays or onlays are a good option for you. Dental inlays are restorations that are carefully created to match your natural tooth color and cover the chewing surface of your teeth between the cusps.

Onlays are very similar to inlays, the difference being that onlays cover both the surface of the tooth as well as one or more cusps of the tooth. Onlays are sometimes referred to as partial crowns and can be a better alternative to a full crown because they require less of the natural tooth to be altered.

Another use for inlays and onlays is repairing and restoring fillings and crowns. The advantages of inlays and onlays include that they are more durable than fillings, more cost-effective than crowns, and they usually require just two short visits to our office. Inlays and onlays require no extra care beyond normal brushing and flossing.
